Discover the Basque Country

Ezagutu Euskal Herria

The Txoko Les 2 Jumeaux*** campsite is located in Hendaye, in the heart of the Basque Country and 5 minutes drive from Spain. We know this region by heart, we love it and we’re proud of it!

So, rather than organizing all sorts of activities at the campsite – which could disturb your peace and quiet – we prefer to encourage you to immerse yourself in Basque culture and guide you in the encounter with our land. So go and discover it and mingle with the locals! Cultural outings, sports activities, discovery of a typical heritage and authentic village festivals: everything is possible here, whether you are a thrill-seeker, a gourmet or an architecture buff. Of course, lazing around is also allowed!

At the reception or over a drink at Txoko, we will be delighted to advise you… and to collect your impressions on your return!
Here are some ideas for outings.

Hendaye

One of Hendaye’s highlights is undoubtedly its beach, the longest on the French Basque coast (3.5 km long!). An idyllic swimming area facing the rocks of the two twins, supervised in summer, its bay attracts a varied public. Surfers of all levels enjoy this safe spot, perfect for beginners and advanced surfers alike. But all kinds of water activities are possible here: sailing, paddle board, jet ski, etc. Families with children love the wide expanse of the gently sloping beach. Shops, surf shops, bars, restaurants and even thalassotherapy are in the direct vicinity. In short, during your stay with us, everything will be within walking distance!

The castle and the domain of Abbadia, perched on the cliff, are also worth the detour and constitute at the same time a splendid stroll with sight on the Atlantic and a fascinating cultural visit.

Hendaye has been awarded the Tourism and Handicap / Family Plus label.

Basque, or ratherEuskera, is the oldest language spoken in Europe.

Typical villages

They are numerous in the region. Espelette, Ainhoa, Sare and many others will give you the opportunity to admire the traditional half-timbered houses, to attend a pelota match, to vibrate to the sound of the superb Basque songs or to taste the famous cream cake or cherry jam. Every summer, they come alive with various festivities. Count on us to inform you about them, we know them by heart!

Hiking in the Basque Country

Our region is full of hiking trails offering unforgettable landscapes. Good news: there is something for everyone. La Rhune, Mondarrain, Baïgura, Ursuya, Atxuria, the crests of Iparla and the Peñasd’Itxusi are among the most famous peaks, while the famous GR 10 (crossing the Pyrenees) starts in Hendaye itself. On the program: the mountains of course, but also the views of the ocean and the company of birds of prey and pottocks, the typical horses of the Basque Country.

Are you a bike fan? The Vélodyssée, which links Hendaye to Roscoff, is made for you!

Our favorite walk: the famous coastal path, which offers 25 kilometers of breathtaking panoramas to our amazed eyes.

And what about the Southern Basque Country?

Hondarribia

Only a few kilometers from our Hendaye campsite and accessible by road or by sea shuttle, Fontarrabie(Hondarribia in Basque) is a beautiful fortified fishing town overlooking the Bidasoa, the coastal river of the Basque Country. Medieval and colorful, it has a superb historic center, a port and a very pleasant bay. It is the ideal place to enjoy some pintxos (typical Basque tapas) and fresh seafood in a warm and picturesque atmosphere.

On September 8, don’t miss the Fiesta of the Alarde: dressed in their traditional costume, the inhabitants thank the Virgin of Guadalupe in procession for having lifted the siege suffered by the city in 1638.

Finally, it would be a pity to leave Fontarabia without enjoying the breathtaking view of the Jaizkibel, the unmissable Basque mountain located at 549 meters above sea level.

Donostia

What a beautiful city San Sebastian is and how many pleasures there are! In this Spain’s splendid seaside resort, you can enjoy the magnificent sandy beach of La Concha, the superb promenade and the cobbled streets of the historic center, where you can savour a few tapas accompanied by a glass of wine. Unless you have succumbed to the txuleta, the tasty local beef rib? To finish in beauty, go up by the funicular to Mount Igueldo. An incredible panorama awaits you.

After a busy day, you will be delighted to find the calm of the campsite Txoko Les 2 Jumeaux. Perhaps you’ll even treat yourself to one last swim? After all, the beach is only 200 meters away…
